For many international professionals, rent is the single largest monthly cost after Danish tax. A 60,000 DKK gross salary can feel comfortable in Kalundborg, Holbæk or Odense but much tighter in central Copenhagen, Frederiksberg or Gentofte. The best place to live is therefore not always the nicest area; it is the area that fits your job location, commute tolerance, family needs and monthly savings target.
As a first screening rule, try to keep cold rent below 30–35% of expected monthly net pay if you are single, and below 35–40% for a couple or family only when the second income or child-related needs justify it. If rent plus utilities consumes more than 45% of net pay, the offer may still work, but savings and lifestyle flexibility become much weaker.

For maximum convenience, live in Copenhagen or Frederiksberg. For better savings, compare outer Copenhagen, Lyngby and Roskilde. Roskilde can be a strong compromise if the train commute is acceptable and your role is hybrid.
Start with Lyngby and Hørsholm, then compare Gentofte only if the salary is strong or family/neighbourhood priorities justify the premium. Without a car, check door-to-door public transport before choosing a cheaper area.
To save as much money as possible, live in Kalundborg, Holbæk or nearby west-Zealand towns. A Copenhagen lifestyle can cost 6,000–15,000 DKK more per month in rent and transport pressure.
Living in Odense is usually the best financial default. You keep city convenience while avoiding Copenhagen-level rent. Only pay Copenhagen prices if your household has a second job, family reason or hybrid split that requires it.
